The gift of God 

When God at first made man,

Having a glass of blessings standing by,

"Let us", said He,"pour on him all we can:

Let the world's riches, which dispersed lie,

Contract into a span."

So strength first made a way;

Then beauty flow'd, then wisdom, honour, pleasure;

When almost all was out, God made a stay,

Perceiving that alone, of all his treasure,

Rest in the bottom lay.

"Bestow this jewel also on my creature,

And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature;

So both should losers be.

Yet let him keep the rest

                                             صدای خدا

می گویند:

کشیشی که بسیار خدا را عبادت کرده بود در میان سیلاب گیر افتاده بود. هنگامی که امدادگر اتش نشانیاز او خواست تا دستش را بگیرد و از معرکه نجات یابد  کشیش گفت: سالها او را عبادت کرده ام و جز او از کسی کمک نگرفته ام اینک نیز به او امیدوارم.

اب بالا و بالاتر می امد. امدادگر از کشیش خواست دست او را بگیرد و کشیش گفت: به این شرک تن نمی دهم در معرض امتحان الهی هستم و می خواهم از این امتحان سربلند بیرون بیایم.

مدتی گذشت اب بالا و بالاتر امد, کشیش خدا را صدا می زد و از او کمک می خواست و با زبان همه ی پیشوایان دینی با خدا سخن گفت. تا اینکه اب کشیش را فرا گرفت و جان به جان افرین تسلیم کرد. روح کشیش به پروردگار گفت: من که جز تو کسی را صدا نکردم, من که جز تو بر کس دیگری امید نداشتم, چرا ناامیدم کردی.  و پروردگار گفت: به ندای تو لبیک گفتم و امدادگر را برای نجات تو فرستادم,  امدادگر به تو گفت که  برای کمک به تو امده است  اما تو صدای من را نشنیدی!
